PASADENA — “White Bird in a Blizzard,” directed by Gregg Araki, opens Friday, Oct. 31, and runs through Thursday, Nov. 6, at Laemmle’s Playhouse 7, 673 E. Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena.
Kat Connors (played by Shailene Woodley) is 17 years old when her perfect homemaker mother, Eve (Eva Green), a beautiful, enigmatic, and haunted woman, disappears — just as Kat is discovering and relishing her newfound sexuality.
Having lived for so long in a stifled, emotionally repressed household, she barely registers her mother’s absence and certainly doesn’t blame her doormat of a father, Brock (Christopher Meloni), for the loss. In fact, it’s almost a relief. But as time passes, Kat begins to come to grips with how deeply Eve’s disappearance has affected her.
Returning home on a break from college, she finds herself confronted with the truth about her mother’s departure, and her own denial about the events surrounding it.
The cast also includes Angela Basset, Gabourey Sidibe, Shiloh Fernandez and Thomas Jane.
The film, which is rated R, is based on the novel of the same name by Laura Kasischke. Araki wrote the screenplay and also served as editor and co-producer. “White Bird in a Blizzard” had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival last January.
The Seattle Timescalled the film “a unique, strange and beautiful coming-of-age story.”
Araki is known for such independent films as “Kaboom” (2010), “Smiley Face” (2007), “Mysterious Skin” (2004), “Splendor” (1999), “Nowhere” (1997), “The Doom Generation” (1995), “Totally F***ed Up” (1993), and “The Living End” (1992).
